Forging ahead with the perfect finish!
At Indigo we love to look to the past and resurrect the old days when every element of a piece of furniture was integral to its style and design, even the handles and hinges. It’s this “over-engineered” quality set by the industrialists of the Victorian age that we so admire.
So, influenced by the original blacksmiths designs we set out to find an old fashioned, traditional pattern-maker* that would be able to turn what we had in our minds eye into reality. Luckily enough we found a father and son team close by that still followed the traditional manufacturing techniques that we needed to produce our metalwork with that unique handmade quality.
Shown within the images below you can see the moulds that were produced to our bespoke specifications and designs. These moulds were then used to cast our handles, hinges and latches.
It would have been so much easier to find an off the shelf solution but it’s simply not the Indigo way and we’re delighted with the fabulous, rich “gun metal” finish that the old fashioned route has provided us with.
We’ve always said that “quality is in the detail” and as you can see as you browse our collection of handmade furniture the stunning and unique handles, latches and hinges really do make the difference….and who’d of thought it would have such a tale to tell!
*Traditional pattern-making is a skilled trade where “patterns” are made using a wood pattern and a sand cast mould. The item is then cast, in this case using molten iron.
