Indigo Furniture have announced this week that they are to introduce an initiative to make their most important material, wood, more sustainable. For every £500 a customer spends Indigo will plant a tree on behalf of them at one of five sites around the UK. The initiative is in partnership with the Woodland Trust, who will carry out the planting and who Indigo have worked closely with since 2007.

Indigo Furniture, who are based in Matlock at the heart of the Peak District, design and manufacture a distinctive range of quality handmade furniture. The chunky unique designs have become a trademark of the company, who pride themselves on producing investment pieces that have a sense of individuality about them.

The company take great pride in their workmanship and the quality of materials used as Tim Lowry, Marketing Director at Indigo Furniture, explains “We pride ourselves on creating pieces of furniture which are both beautiful and practical and which are all made to the highest possible standards. To achieve this quality only the very best materials are used”.

He continues “As well as making sure that the very best materials are used it is our personal responsibility to ensure that the amount of wood we use is replaced and maintained for future generations to come”.

It is clear that Indigo Furniture take nothing more seriously than their integrity as a British company who are both flying the flag for design and manufacturing as well as minimising the impact they have on the environment. As well as working with the Woodland Trust to replace the materials they have used in production Indigo also spend a lot of time sourcing timber from around the UK which they can then reuse to make completely unique pieces of furniture.

The Indigo Reclaimed Beam Table for example is made up of beams from the Crossley Motors factory in Manchester. Built in 1882 to house production for car engines for Bugatti and later on for armoured cars and aircraft for World War One the plant was closed in 2009. Wanting to keep the spirit of British Manufacturing alive Indigo purchased the structural timbers, rafters and joists that made up the factory which they have since turned into beautiful dining room tables.

It is such attention to detail and their partnership with the Woodland Trust that has set Indigo Furniture apart from their competitors. It also goes some way to explain the success that they are experiencing in the current climate. With consumers looking for much more than fashionable statement making pieces and wanting to make long-term investments in high quality items it seems that Indigo Furniture is producing the items which answers these problems.
