A day in the life…
Ever wondered what it would be like to be part of our team? We caught up with Hannah Fry, Senior Sales and Ali Prince, Sales Manager…
What’s an average day at an Indigo showroom look like?
“No two days at Indigo are the same – we are very lucky to have such wonderful customers, so you can be offering advice on our pieces on the phone, via email or in store. We also help with explaining to customers how to care for their furniture. There is a lot of hustle and bustle and it is just a really enjoyable place to work, fast paced and never boring. Our customers are always happy after all they are coming to order beautiful furniture whats not to be excited about.”
Is the showroom open all week?
“Yes, week days tend to be a bit quieter in store but with lots of phone calls to customers and from a Matlock point of view – plenty of admin work to deal with. This is broken up by Saturday and Sundays when the showroom is full of new customers to talk to, products to care for. This is where you spend plenty of time on your feet so comfy shoes are a must! We can manage a couple of days of heels then comfy shoes at the weekend.”
What do you love about working at Indigo?
“Just everything really. We really are one big family, from the drivers to the other departments at head office to the other sales branches everyone is always happy to help with anything. Our Christmas parties are always loads of fun too! It is also a fantastic company to work for, with room for personal and professional development. As I have said – no two days are the same so you don’t get the chance to ever feel bored with it.”
“I think its an exciting time for a family normally choosing furniture and they either make a weekend of it or combine it with passing through Derbyshire, at the end of the day we make furniture to last so it has to be right for there needs I would want to come and have a look and try.”
What’s the furthest a customer has driven to see your showroom?
“Goodness – from Scotland I think! But we always try and help customers who can’t journey to our showrooms on the phone or by email and our fantastic samples are always good for people to look at. But if they can visit us it is an experience in itself – all our sales team are friendly and knowledgeable – you can see this by our fantastic reviews on Trust Pilot. Our furniture is very tactile – the first thing people do when they come in is touch the wood and the leather and it helps to see the quality of the build. I think I can top you there Hannah, I had a customer fly in from Spain, he’d been to look at some particular tiles and then he flew into Gatwick and caught the train up. He did actually place an order and he arranged his own shipping, so just a little bit further than Scotland ! our customers travel from all points of the compass really.”
What’s the retail landscape in Matlock looking like?
“In Matlock we do have a variety of shops some a little bit quirky, but in general something for everyone and we can’t not mention the addition to the town of a very famous fast food restaurant – that has made lunches more interesting! The addition to the town of a hotel chain has boosted tourism – we are always very lucky to have lots of people in the town over the weekend with so many quirky antique shops on our road. The annual Victorian Christmas market is always lovely too – the town is packed and it brings in lots of visitors to the showroom.”
How do you feel social media has enhanced the retail experience?
“I think social media helps retail so much – its quick and easy for prospective customers to get in touch with any questions at a convenient time for them instead of having to wait until we are open. The reviews people can leave are also a fantastic piece of mind for anyone who can’t visit a showroom and may feel apprehensive ordering furniture online without first viewing it. I think we all rely on social media to inform us of honest and true opinions about business and share experiences which is lovely.”

We are currently looking for a Sales Advisor to work as part of our small team at our Matlock Showroom. Providing a friendly yet professional approach to a discerning customer whilst working to form a rapport and ensure that the Indigo shopping experience is in line with the Directors’ vision.
• Retail experience would be advantageous along with a passion for furniture and/or interiors.
• Strong communication skills and a high level of customer service is essential.
