WHAT DO YOU LOVE?
We’ve been delighted by your response to our competition and it was truly a pleasure to read through hundreds of entries. The question “What do you love about The Merchant’s Chest?” inspired humour, personal memories and even poetry from many – giving us a wonderful insight into the lovers of Indigo.
But there could only be one winner, and we’re very pleased to announce Rosie Hughes will be the proud owner of The Merchant’s Chest. Her winning entry is at the end of this post, alongside some of our favourites.
“As a child, my father handcrafted lovely chests as a hobby. He always told me that dovetail joints are an essential feature of fine workmanship that will last a lifetime. I’ve carried his thoughts with me throughout my life.”
BUILT TO LAST
This delightful entry from N Fuller really captured the essence of the Indigo build, where we strive to balance function with aesthetic. “Built to last is not something you say about things these days, neither is elegant simplicity, but The Merchant’s Chest has both of these attributes in swathes. As with all Indigo products the craftsmanship is faultless and the finish is perfect. It is a welcome addition to any home.” The Merchant’s Chest has been designed for any home, and offers a robust storage solution for any property from small thatched cottage to a large, airy barn conversion.
“We’ve finally, after much saving and hard work, moved to our beautiful, old forever home. It will take many more years of hard work to fill it with beautiful furniture, this chest would be the most amazing start and would be treasured forever.”
G Davies encompasses the spirit of Indigo with his appreciative description of our company. “What I love about The Merchant’s Chest is that it signifies Indigo. Another exceptional piece of furniture crafted by Indigo. The Indigo brand is synonymous for bespoke furniture, skilled craftsmanship and would be a perfect addition in our small quirky cottage.” All Indigo Furniture, not just The Merchant’s Chest, is designed and built with an attention to detail that sets us apart. This innovative piece also breaks apart into two for delivery and installation, making it ideal for small and cosy homes.
“The craftsmanship that goes into these beautiful pieces. They look like they have been made with love, to last a lifetime and be passed down through the generations. The smell of the furniture is beautiful, the wood and wax there is nothing like it.”
An entry from E Matthews gave many reasons for investing in The Merchant’s Chest; from its sheer practicality to the scent of the wood itself.
“What do I love about the new Indigo Merchant’s Chest? I love the solid, handcrafted and simple beauty of the piece; it won’t ever let me down. I love that fact that it’s so useful and beautiful too; I’ll never tire of it. I love the smell of the Canadian pine which will never quite fade away no matter how many years I will spend polishing it to bring out the wonderful grain in the sawn wood.
Like all of my existing Indigo furniture, it’s a beautiful investment piece which will pay be back by saving me so much time on finding all of those nicknacks and bits and bobs that I can never quite find when I need them!” This steadfast chest of drawers is painstakingly handcrafted from slow-growing Quebec pine and finished with natural beeswax for protection.
“It reminds me of home. Growing up in Africa I remember the imposing furniture in my Grandfather’s farmhouse, and our own home. It’s a time when furniture making was an art in itself. Strong woods were carefully chosen and it took months to complete any single piece. Still today treasured furniture is passed down from generation to generation, rather than the mindset of so many now in our ‘disposable’ lifestyle. Now that my husband and I have finally bought our own home, we want to furnish it with love and with pieces that are a true testament to the craftsmanship behind them. Solid furniture that is remarkable to look at and can become a treasured item to pass onto our girls. It took a long time to stumble upon Indigo, and your style immediately made me think of home, and your ethos and love of wood is admirable. It’s furniture we would love in our home.”
KNOTS AND GRAIN
The quality and craftsmanship of The Merchant’s Chest have inspired some entrants to write poetry – including this charming entry from M Haines.
“It’s craftsmanship at its best. The knots and grain in the Quebecan pine, covered in beeswax smells divine. With drawers and handles looking sublime, I’d be over the moon if it were mine.” It is a testament to the passion behind the design and manufacture of The Merchant’s Chest that it brings out such passion in Indigo customers.
Our winner R Hughes evokes a family story yet to be told, both looking to past of a Canadian Forest and to the future of their life together. The principle of taking in a piece of history and adding it to your own is something Indigo Furniture prides above all else.
“Love for the Merchant’s Chest begins in its story and grows as its secrets unfold. Our love for its craftsmanship comes from the carefully cultured Canadian pine, that gives it a history before it even arrives with us. We know its secret is the start of its life in our home, the seamless sealing together of two parts, just like us it feels. So then when we come to use it, more secrets are started. My drawer of treasures and his drawer of memories. Our shared books and photographs stored neatly away for future generations to share. The drawer where we wait to fill with the family yet to come. The Merchant’s Chest begins its life across the seas and with one simple secret. But we love it because it can forever hold our futures together.”
