NEW DESIGN | THE PARTNER’S DESK
Discover our new Partner’s Desk, a vintage-inspired piece of office furniture photographed at The John Smedley Archive.
PINE PARTNER’S DESK
Indigo’s brand new Grand Partner’s Desk is based on a popular 18th and 19th-century design, conceived to let two colleagues work face to face. The solid wood desk’s generous top section is dowelled together to the two lower pedestals, adding to its robust feel. Our take on this iconic British design – originally adapted from the library desks of the gentry – will bring grandeur to any room. Whether you’re writing an important letter or storing away documents, Indigo’s handcrafted Partner’s Desk is as functional as it is unique.
Impressive and wonderfully Dickensian, this solid Quebec Pine piece features bespoke metalwork and an abundance of unyielding dovetail drawers. Each one is lovingly handmade using traditional techniques and vintage machinery. Available as an imposing double or single depth Partner’s Desk, the piece instantly adds a hint of mystery to a study or office. With convenience in mind, both Partner’s Desks also dismantle into two for a smooth delivery – ideal for smaller houses or apartments. Take a closer look below.
“It was designed based on Georgian Partner’s Desks which were originally used by bank partners. They all break down in simple but very effective ways as two pedestals and a top including a row of drawers. The desk incorporates a large amount of storage in varying drawer sizes. The simplicity of the breakdown and the fact it breaks into manageable parts means we can deliver to homes with less than ideal access. This along with a number of other recent units including the Merchant’s Plank Chest, Plank Grand Tallboy and the Plank Highboy all break down as standard allowing access to smaller spaces.”

John Smedley go from strength to strength at their factory in Lea Holloway, Derbyshire. The Indigo creative team enjoyed an amazing day exploring the archives and learning about the company’s rich heritage. We were kindly shown around by the knowledgeable and friendly Jane Middleton-Smith.
Founded in 1784, John Smedley began using one of the first fully fashioned knitting machines in 1825; going on to export globally in 1914. Many local families have a working connection to John Smedley’s, some stretching back generations.
The antique swivel chair is an original piece of furniture from The John Smedley Archive.

The factory, the oldest in the world that’s still manufacturing, sits in the centre of a World Heritage site and its Lea Bridge setting is impossibly scenic set against an imposing backdrop of dramatic hills. In January 2013, John Smedley received the Royal Warrant of Appointment from Her Majesty The Queen as ‘Manufacturer of Fine Knitwear’.
