Local Heroes | Derbyshire’s Secret Orchard Nursery
Explore the delights of Julie Soghomonian’s garden and how to bring colour to a solid oak wooden table.
HIDDEN DERBYSHIRE TREASURE
If you’ve never visited Wirksworth’s Secret Orchard Nursery, you’re missing out on a hidden Derbyshire treasure. Lovingly cared for by Julie Soghomonian, this Secret Garden-esque haven is full of beautiful flowers and beautiful memories. Its colourful blooms and pebbled pathways will make even the most stubborn urbanites yearn for a garden of their own.
RESTORED TO ITS FORMER GLORY
Julie meets the Indigo Furniture team in her wellies, accompanied by her faithful 13-year-old dog Ella. This stunning old garden once belonged to Julie’s grandfather, and after turning to gardening while pregnant, she painstakingly restored it to its former glory. Her picturesque corner of Wirksworth is filled with memories of when her grandad was alive – it’s a true labour of love. With a traditional greenhouse, a mysterious potting shed and breathtaking views of the hills beyond, the Secret Orchard Nursery is straight from a storybook.
UPS AND DOWNS OF GARDENING
The paradise people see when they walk through the wooden gate is worth all the ups and downs of gardening. “Things don’t always go right, but there are also surprises along the way.” says Julie. In fact, she could not imagine not being a gardener. And, as anyone with green fingers will tell you, tending plants is just a natural way of life for her.
“Growing is in my blood.” Julie explains, and her customers know they’re in safe hands.
A FOUNTAIN OF KNOWLEDGE
Hidden behind the sturdy stone wall are flowers of every shape and colour, all with their own handwritten descriptions. The love heart labels and unique decorative touches are a world away from chain garden centres. Julie herself is a fountain of knowledge, always with time for a friendly chat with her customers about their own gardens and lives. You feel like you’re being given a piece of her history, to help enrichen your own for years to come.
FIT FOR A BEATRIX POTTER TALE
As you walk through the rows of picturesque flower beds, look out for rich purple Verbena, cheery yellow Calendula, and vibrant blue Veronica. With an abundance of delicate petals, buzzing bees and heavenly scents, the Secret Orchard Nursery has everything you need to create a garden fit for a Beatrix Potter tale. Just visiting is an experience in itself and there are rows of cut flowers alongside the bedding plants – perfect for gifts or decorating.
DECORATE A SOLID OAK TABLE
Naturally, it was irresistible not to take some of Julie’s flowers back to the Indigo Furniture showroom in Matlock, to decorate a solid oak table for dinner. The character of the golden wood with a simple set of crockery comes alive with the right blooms – your guests will be enchanted. Accessorise your own table with subtle green and white, or astonish the senses with a bouquet of eye-catching colours and shapes.
